LOUD MINDS PROJECT
Phase 1 | Research and Outreach
The "Loud Minds" exhibition is a multi-disciplinary deep dive into the intersecting themes of Blackness, Femininity, Neurodivergence and overcoming shame. The project will include a short art film featuring interviews with 3-5 Black femmes who have either ADHD or Autism, painted portraits of each subject, a quilted assemblage tapestry, and 3-5 painted wood-panel quotes. The subjects have not been solidified yet, but Black femmes who represent diverse backgrounds and industries will be contacted about their possible participation in the project. One large-scale piece planned is called "Tapestry of Shame, Overconsumption, and Whims," an assemblage of clothing and materials collected over the years, items meant to be returned but forgotten, mistakenly duplicated, or purchased on a whim. These habits of ADHD have elicited shame in the past, so the tapestry aims to reconstruct and display these items in full glory. The overall goal is to transform the gallery space into an immersive, vibrant, and slightly chaotic experience that tangibly conveys the beautiful complexity of the Black femme, and neurodivergent mind, and provides a glimpse of each interviewee's internal journey.
